LG, Microsoft sign mobile collaboration deal

South Korea's LG Electronics Inc and Microsoft Corp. on Monday said they had signed a preliminary agreement on strategic collaboration in mobile technology. "The agreement ensures continued strategic collaboration in R&D, marketing, applications, and services in the field of converged mobile devices," LG said in a statement.

"Both companies will continue to define and align their mobile strategies through annual top management meeting." The agreement was signed during Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer's trip to South Korea. Meanwhile larger home rival Samsung Electronics on the same day announced the launch of the domestic version of the Omnia touch screen handset model, based on Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system.

The model will be available from mid-November under an exclusive deal with No. 1 mobile operator SK Telecom, Samsung said. Microsoft is hoping its Windows Mobile operating system can continue to challenge Symbian, a platform backed by the world's top mobile phone maker Nokia and used in two-thirds of smartphones -- mobile handsets with computer-like capabilities.

Blackberry-maker Research in Motion and Apple Inc's iPhone are also growing threats to Symbian, while several manufacturers are planning or have started to roll out smartphones based on Google's Android software. Both LG and Samsung are members of the Symbian Foundation and are also developing models based on Android.

New Apple iPhones come loaded with expectations

Apple Inc. needs a dramatic second act with the next generation of iPhones, which roll out Friday with faster internet access and lower retail prices, to sustain its momentum and keep fickle consumers and Wall Street happy.

But given its history, there are no guarantees against a letdown for the company or its volatile stock. Apple has stumbled before in its foray into the cellular business, with a poorly executed price cut two months after the iPhone launch that left many early buyers fuming. And now that it's a significant part of the wireless market, Apple faces some of the same threats as more-established handset makers.

Among those pressures: intensifying competition and the uncertainty of a fractured market with many big players. There's also the risk that even with Apple's sparkling reputation, the Apple iPhone might become so widely available that it loses some of the cachet that inspires buyers to wait in lines outside stores. It's clear that Apple has rattled the cellphone industry with the iPhone's design and features, which are being copied by other handset makers. And the company appears on track to meeting its sales targets for the iPhone — essential to appeasing investors.

New BlackBerry may target iPhone

The makers of the BlackBerry smart phone may be working on a rival to Apple iPhone, reports suggest. Research In Motion (RIM) has traditionally been a very business-focused manufacturer, but has recently moved more into the mainstream with Blackberry Mobile Phone i.e. Pearl handsets. Now, according to an analyst, the Canadian company may be hoping to take on Apple's new entrant in the mobile market with its upcoming 9000-series.

"The 9000 is supposed to be a touchscreen device, very similar in form factor to the iPhone," said Carmi Levy, of AR Communications, in an interview with the publication Unstrung. "Which means that it is not an enterprise-friendly device."

According to Levy, the 9000-series was originally due to appear towards the end of this year, but has now been put back until 2008. The phones will be RIM's first without a keyboard of some variety, and will also incorporate enhanced multimedia capabilities, Levy claimed. He added that RIM would continue to produce the keyboard-sporting models for which it is famous.

iPhone 'sells 70,000 units' during first week

The Apple iPhone sold some 70,000 units during its first weekend on sale, The Mirror has worked out. The newspaper reports that the Apple iPhone 3G , which went on sale at 6.02pm last Friday, sold at "a rate of 4.2 per second at the height of the frenzy at 1,300 outlets". This works out to "as many as 70,000" sales across all the Apple, Carphone Warehouse and O2 stores.
A rush of new O2 customers.

None of the three firms are willing to give out any official sales figures but an Apple spokesperson said it was 'pleased' with the initial interest. Peter Erskine, chief executive of O2, told the Evening Standard that the Apple iPhone has been "the fastest selling device we have ever seen. It sold in the tens of thousands but not as many as 100,000".

Speaking to Tech.co.uk, O2's PR manager Nick Wilkins said that initial Apple iPhone activation figures showed that two thirds of customers were new to O2. Seems like most people didn't unlock their Apple iPhones in the end...Buy Apple iPhone
