Orange UK Named Best Entertainment Operator in Europe

Orange UK has been named “Best Entertainment Operator” in Europe at the Mobile Entertainment Awards in Cannes. Fighting off fierce competition from across the European mobile industry, Orange mobile phones bagged the top award of the night following innovative multimedia deals with the likes of social networking site Bebo and leading record labels.

Orange UK also won “Best Multimedia Marketing Campaign” for “Frank TV” – its mobile TV channel hosted by and starring Chelsea and England football star Frank Lampard. The awards come after Orange revealed a dramatic rise in non-voice revenues in its first quarter results announced earlier this week (07/05/08). Data now accounts for 23.6% of Orange UK network revenues.

For the first time, Orange’s year-on-year rise in ARPU (annual revenue per user, or the amount a customer spends per year) was fuelled by customers spending more on data rather than voice. Orange UK’s total ARPU was at £268 in the first quarter of this year – up £11 on the same time last year. £6 of that came solely from data services, while the other £5 from voice.

Some of Orange UK's web site is missing

Frustatingly for this particular INQ hack, Orange UK's servers appear to have been on the blink all day. This is very definitely affecting customer support but it's hard to gauge if anything else has gone missing.

One of the advantages of being an Orange mobile subscriber, for example, is that in theory you should be able to log onto the web site and view your mobile phone bill. However, Orange's servers have been coming up with a variety of reasons why they can't actually show any such useful information. The final message circa 6pm this evening was, "Sorry. Unfortunately we are currently experiencing a technical problem. Orange are aware of the problem and are working to resolve it. Please try again later." Previously the system had been coming up with all manner of lame excuses including the usual stand-by of 'file not found'.

The INQ had been putting it down to problems at its own ISP but this final message appears to be a confession. Hopefully by Monday morning everything will be back to normal.

“Orange World” portal opens the way for differentiated bilingual services bringing to the customers new entertainment applications and downloads. As for a more serious approach, the portal provides a fast and reliable on-line access for business men and professionals to follow up on their e-mails and data communications, compatible to different types of handsets.

“It is a different type of portal. It adds functions that were not provided in the “Yalla” portal. Customers will find the service different to anything they have experienced and the amount of new bilingual content and services in “Orange World” will prove the unmatched quality of the service and provide more entertainment functions,” said Tom Hanks, VP JTG / CEO Orange personal. “We aspire for the best and for what is new and successful on international markets.”

Other than offering games, ring tones and other relevant functions, “Orange World” will provide new tools that can increase or decrease font and page size, and would allow sending free bookmarks to friends.

However, Orange Mobile Network customers can access to view fully the portal and inspect different content such as news, weather, prayer times and entertainment. Downloads in addition to the WAP traffic are chargeable at 3 fils per KB, which will be minimal. An additional 9 fils per 10 KB for Web Traffic while playing online.
